Boy, 6, Dies in Sleep After School Sends Him Home Saying Head Injury Was ‘Just a Bump’

Muhammad Yaseen Uddin, a six-year-old boy, was found dead in his bed after being sent home from Marlborough Primary School in Small Heath, Birmingham, following a head injury. His grieving father, Simriel Uddin, claims the school downplayed the incident, telling his wife that it was “just a bump” and “nothing serious”, reported by the daily Mail.

Mr. Uddin paid tribute to his “beautiful, kind-hearted little boy”, recalling the heartbreaking sequence of events. After Muhammad, also known as Yaseen, hit his head at school, his mother was assured that it wasn’t serious. He was picked up and brought home, where he spent the evening watching TV and sharing his sister’s birthday cake before heading to bed.

The following morning, tragedy struck. While Mr. Uddin was at work, his wife made a frantic call, telling him that Muhammad wouldn’t wake up. Rushing home, Mr. Uddin found police and paramedics outside their house. He was informed his son had been taken to the hospital, but the worst news awaited him. “I was taken to see my son, but I realised Yaseen was gone,” he said.

Mr. Uddin expressed his frustration and disappointment with the school, emphasizing the need for medically trained staff and a more proactive approach to potential injuries. He urged schools to be “more alert” and to have first aiders who can identify warning signs after accidents.

The incident comes just years after a similar tragedy at Leigh Primary School, part of the same Leigh Trust. In 2020, Yasir Hussain, 10, died after hitting his head at school. Despite staff calling an ambulance in that case, an inquest concluded Yasir should have been sent to the hospital sooner, though it may not have prevented his death.

In response to Muhammad’s death, Razia Ali, the executive headteacher at Marlborough Primary School, expressed deep sorrow. “Yaseen was an incredibly helpful, kind, and caring pupil who brought a smile to the face of everyone who came across him. I know I speak for everyone when I say he will be deeply missed. All our thoughts and prayers are with Yaseen’s family and friends”, reported by the Mirror.

The school is providing pastoral support for pupils and staff and will discuss an appropriate way to commemorate Muhammad with his family.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up by Muhammad’s family to raise funds to build a mosque in his memory, honoring the bright and kind young boy whose life ended far too soon.
