Backpacker Found Dead on Thailand’s Death Island as Family Mourns His Dream Life Cut Short
0A 21-year-old backpacker from Ireland has tragically been found dead in his hotel room on Thailand’s notorious Koh Tao Island, known for its beautiful marine life but also its dark reputation for unexplained deaths. Robby Kinlan, from Clare in Munster, was discovered on January 9, 2024, by a friend who went to check on him after he failed to respond.
He was lying on his bed in just boxer shorts, holding his phone, which was connected to a wall socket, but the device was locked by the time authorities arrived. Robby’s devastated mother, Tracy King, expressed her heartbreak and paid tribute to her son, saying: “Rest in peace my precious son Robby. He is resting in this beautiful Temple in Koh Tao, Thailand, before his removal back to Ireland.
I’m heartbroken and overwhelmed and so very grateful for all the kindness being shown to us at this time. Thanks to all friends and family.” She described her son as a kind and selfless person, always helping others, and shared that he was “living his dream” in Thailand, spending his days freediving and scuba diving, reported by the Mirror.
Robby had been traveling through Asia and had found happiness doing what he loved. His family, heartbroken over the loss, is now focused on bringing Robby’s body back to Ireland for a proper burial. To help with the costs, they have launched a fundraising appeal. If they are unable to repatriate him, they will honor his memory with a cremation at a Buddhist temple.
Despite Koh Tao’s allure for tourists due to its stunning underwater ecosystems, the island has gained a grim reputation due to a series of mysterious deaths over the years, earning it the nickname “Death Island.” Local authorities are investigating Robby’s death, which they suspect may have been due to acute heart failure. The body is still waiting to be sent for an autopsy after rough seas delayed the transportation.
Robby’s family is still awaiting details from the embassy, as they remain in contact with authorities. “There were no alcoholic beverages found in his room and no signs of assault,” said Lieutenant Colonel Theeraphat Sanjai, adding that the cause of death is still to be determined.
As his family and friends mourn this tragic loss, they remember Robby as a bright young man who was living his best life before his untimely death.
