Red alert weather maps warn Arctic freeze is heading for Britain

Britain’s early taste of summer is coming to an abrupt end, with forecasters warning of a 350-mile-wide Arctic blast heading straight for us. After a couple of weeks of unbroken sunshine and dry spells, live weather maps are now flashing red as a huge mass of icy air makes its way down from the north, landing on Wednesday, 16 April, reported the Express.
Scotland is expected to take the brunt of it, with temperatures possibly plunging as low as -6C. Central and western parts are in for a strong chance of snow, especially across the Highlands, where several centimetres could fall every hour. Down in England, places like Cumbria and the Lake District might also see a snowy surprise, according to WXCharts.
The Met Office has added to the warnings, saying that stormy conditions could hit parts of Scotland on top of the snow. The week kicks off with “a mixture of sunny intervals and showers, some on the heavy side with hail and thunder, and snow on the mountains” for the Highlands and Eilean Siar. From Tuesday onwards, get ready for “night frosts” and the odd bright spell, with a few showers and even some persistent rain likely in the east.
Craig Snell from the Met Office summed it up, saying: “It is going to be a more changeable week this week compared to what we have been used to for the last two to three weeks.” With high pressure gone, low pressure is in charge now, bringing the wet stuff back to most parts of the UK.
It’s not all doom and gloom—there will still be some sunshine peeking through—but don’t be shocked if thunder and hail gatecrash your week. Most of the west is in line for the heaviest showers, while the east might just dodge the worst of it. Night-time will feel especially chilly, with frost in the more sheltered rural areas.
A more organised band of showers is expected to creep in from the west and stall over parts of the country, bringing potentially heavy rain and rumbles of thunder. Meanwhile, the southeast looks set to stay a bit warmer and drier for now.
It’s shaping up to be one of those classic UK weather weeks—sun, snow, frost, and thunder all crammed into a few days. Keep your coat handy, and maybe don’t pack away those winter bits just yet.
