Amanda Holden has shared a hilarious—and slightly cheeky—moment from her wedding to Chris Hughes, revealing how her husband playfully poked fun at her parents during his speech, reported Bristol Live. Chatting on Heart Radio with co-host Jamie Theakston and guest Danny Dyer, the conversation naturally drifted to weddings, as Danny’s daughter, Dani Dyer, is preparing to marry West Ham footballer Jarrod Bowen.
When the talk turned to wedding speeches, Danny questioned why it’s still mostly men giving them, prompting Amanda to proudly declare that she gave a speech at her own wedding. Danny, never one to miss an opportunity for a bit of banter, quipped, “I bet you did,” before joking that her speech must have lasted “an hour”—a comment that had everyone in the studio laughing.
Reflecting on her big day, Amanda then dropped a classic wedding anecdote, revealing how her husband had everyone in stitches with his speech. “My husband, in his speech, welcomed my mum and dad to the family, then said he couldn’t believe they drove a Skoda and that he’d bought them a new mode of transport.”
She then revealed the punchline: “And then he handed my mother a witch’s broomstick.” Danny was in shock, exclaiming, “He’s gone in on your mum, that’s very brave!” But knowing Amanda’s sense of humour, it’s safe to say the joke was taken in good spirits.
Amanda and Chris have been together for more than 20 years, tying the knot in 2008. When asked in the past about the key to their long and happy marriage, Amanda credited humour as a big factor. Speaking to OK! Magazine, she also admitted that she still fancies Chris just as much as she did when they first met.
“We’ll be eating dinner in a restaurant, he’ll go to the loo, then I’ll look up and catch a glimpse of a man and think he’s fit! Then I’ll realize, ‘Gosh, that’s my husband!’” she said. She also believes keeping each other on their toes is important, adding: “Chris challenges me and I challenge him – that’s another secret to a good marriage.”
Lately, the couple has been making more effort to spend quality time together, recently taking up badminton to reconnect amid their busy work schedules.
Amanda, of course, is one of the UK’s most recognisable TV personalities, thanks to her role as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent and as the voice of Heart Breakfast. Meanwhile, Chris, a record producer, manages the career of X Factor winner James Arthur.
The pair share two daughters, Lexi, 19, and Hollie, 13. Amanda was previously married to comedian Les Dennis, with their marriage ending in divorce after eight years.
