Kay Burley Set to Leave Sky News After Five Years on Breakfast Show Amid Major Changes
Reports have surfaced that Kay Burley may soon be departing from Sky News’ breakfast show after a solid five-year stint, with insiders suggesting that her last appearance could be imminent, possibly as early as this week. There is speculation that Burley, 63, might even say goodbye to Sky News altogether, although some whispers hint that a reshuffle within the network could allow her to stay, reported by the Mirror.
Kay Burley has been a staple of Sky News since joining the network in 1989 as one of its original faces. In October 2019, she took over the reins of the breakfast show, cementing her place in the hearts of early risers across the UK.
Throughout her illustrious career, she has covered monumental events such as the tragic death of Princess Diana and the devastating 9/11 attacks. Just last month, Burley took a moment to reflect on her near-four-decade run in broadcasting, sharing a nostalgic post on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “Thirty-six years today @skynews and counting…”, according to the Daily Record.
Her reflection came after fans expressed concern over her noticeable absence during the summer. However, Burley made a triumphant return to the airwaves at the end of August, tweeting, “Thanks for all your very kind messages but summer is over and I’m back on Tuesday. Very much looking forward to seeing you from 7 am. Do hope so xx.”
In light of recent shifts at Sky News, the network has trimmed its presenter team and introduced new duos, such as Gareth Barlow and Mhari Aurora, who now anchor together. Additionally, Sky News’ top business presenter, Ian King, has announced that he will be stepping down from his long-running show Business Live with Ian King after a decade-long tenure.
His departure follows the show’s relocation from London’s financial district to Sky Group’s Osterley headquarters. Ian will remain with Sky until the spring of next year, but the show will continue to air live on weekdays, hosted by Paul Kelso and Darren McCaffrey.
Sky News Group Executive Chairman David Rhodes praised Ian’s contributions to the network, stating, “Ian has been with Sky for 10 years, enriching our news report with his knowledge of finance and his network in the City of London.” He also assured that Business Live would continue to thrive, with additional investment in its digital content, including the popular Money Blog.
