Adam Thomas Opens Up About Fighting Arthritis Without Medication

Former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas has shared an emotional update on his battle with rheumatoid arthritis, revealing he’s exploring a natural approach to managing the condition.

Adam, known for his role as Adam Barton in Emmerdale and currently starring as Donte Charles in Waterloo Road, took to Instagram to open up about his journey after receiving messages from concerned fans, reported by Metro.co.uk.

“So a couple of weeks back I started my new medication Sulfasalazine,” he began. “Whilst I was on it, it just got me thinking, am I really going to be on medication for the rest of my life?!! There has to be a better way… Can I beat this without medication? So that’s what I’m going to do!! Well, at least try to!”

The 35-year-old actor explained he has decided to pause his medication temporarily and focus on a natural approach, beginning with changes to his diet. “I’ve been doing a lot of research into this (saw a few things on YouTube) and I know this disease has a lot to do with my diet, or so I’m told… So that’s where I’m going to start!”

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints. It can lead to severe complications, including joint damage, fatigue, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

While there is no cure, early diagnosis and medical treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and flare-ups. Adam acknowledged the risks of pausing medication but said: “If all else fails, then I will turn back to my meds, but for now this is the route I’m going to take.”

He made it clear he isn’t encouraging others to follow the same path. “This is my journey, and I wouldn’t advise anyone to do the same, but I just have to give this a go. At least that way I left no stone unturned… I promise to keep you guys updated along the way.”

Back in October, Adam shared how his condition had worsened to the point where he struggled to walk or get dressed on his own. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he admitted: “These last few days have been scary, had a little cry to myself today – it can really get on top of you.”

Despite the challenges, Adam remains determined to fight the disease, offering support to others experiencing similar struggles: “To anyone going through the same thing and is alone – I see you, I feel you! It’s going to get better, don’t give up.”

Adam’s bravery and openness continue to inspire, as he takes steps to navigate his condition with hope and resilience.
