Dad Found Dead After Enduring a Traumatic Childhood of Abuse and Abandonment by His Own Parents

A devoted father who overcame a traumatic childhood to create a loving family tragically took his own life earlier this year. Mick Beaumont, 47, had endured severe neglect and abuse as a child but was determined to build a nurturing home for his wife Stephanie and their two children. However, despite his dedication to his family, Mick’s unresolved trauma and a debilitating back injury ultimately overwhelmed him.

Mick had a difficult upbringing. When he was just 15, his parents abandoned him in a B&B and moved to Australia with his brother. According to an inquest at Preston Coroners Court, Mick’s father, a former military man, had been physically abusive, once even throwing Mick down the stairs. These early experiences left deep emotional scars that haunted him throughout his life.

Despite his painful past, Mick found happiness with his wife Stephanie, a midwife, and they built a family together. Known as a “gentle giant” by friends and loved ones, Mick was devoted to protecting his family and showering them with the love and care he never received as a child. Stephanie described him as kind, romantic, and always helpful. “He supported me through my studies and would tell everyone who listened that he put me up on a pedestal,” she said. “He loved driving, and all of our cats were named after cars.”

Unfortunately, Mick’s mental health took a turn for the worse after a back injury left him unable to work. He often expressed feeling like a burden, unable to fulfill the role of a husband and father. His injury, combined with memories of childhood abuse, left him struggling to cope. Stephanie revealed that Mick had refused surgeries for his back out of fear that they could leave him unable to walk or have more children.

In the early hours of May 29, 2023, after helping his elderly neighbors, Mick returned home and was found sitting in the dark, lost in thought. The next morning, Stephanie woke up to find him missing, with only a note left behind indicating his intention to take his own life. A search was launched, and police treated Mick as a high-risk missing person. Tragically, he was later found in a secluded area near their home in Bamber Bridge.

During the inquest, Stephanie shared the heartbreaking moment when she insisted on seeing Mick after his body was found. “I sat with Mick and held his hand. The sun was beaming. I just couldn’t leave him,” she said.

Mick’s death was ruled a suicide, caused by an excess of medication and asphyxiation. Area Coroner Kate Bisset returned a conclusion of suicide, highlighting the enduring impact of his early trauma.
