Kate Garraway Reveals Heartbreaking Message from Son About Derek Draper That Left Her ‘Stunned’

Kate Garraway has opened up about a deeply emotional moment shared with her son, Billy, following her win at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on September 11. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who took home her third consecutive award in the Best Authored Documentary category, was joined by her children Darcy and Billy during the ceremony. Garraway dedicated the award to her late husband, Derek Draper, calling for greater support for carers.

Garraway’s documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, follows the final year of Draper’s life before he passed away in January at the age of 56. Derek had battled the long-term effects of COVID-19 for years, a journey Garraway has documented through two previous award-winning programs in 2021 and 2022, reported Daily Record.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain after her NTA win, Garraway shared the emotional impact the moment had on her and her children. “Very emotional for us,” she said to co-hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid. She revealed that both Darcy and Billy were overcome with emotion backstage.

“The children, when we came off stage, burst into tears, and Bill said, ‘In the end, I did want to speak’. Neither of them wanted to say anything at first, and obviously, I was very happy for them not to,” Garraway shared. “Then he said, ‘I wanted to say dad lives on in our hearts.’ I told him, ‘I’m so glad you didn’t because that would have floored me, and I wouldn’t have been able to speak.'”

Garraway expressed her gratitude to everyone who voted for the documentary, not just for her but for carers everywhere. “So personal for us. Thank you to everyone who voted. Not for me but for all the carers,” she said.

After the ceremony, Garraway posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking her supporters while sharing a video of herself holding the award. She wrote, “My goodness—thank you all so so much—we are in bits but I promise I won’t let you down.” She also expressed admiration for her fellow nominees, including Robbie Williams, David and Victoria Beckham, Rhod Gilbert, and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

Fans flooded social media to congratulate Garraway on her win. One fan commented, “Congratulations Kate, Darcy, and Billy on winning this award. You’ve had to bare your souls at the most difficult times, and your selflessness has brought attention to carers everywhere.”

Another fan added, “So pleased for you, Kate—well deserved for Derek and you… keep going!”
