Ex-Prison Officer Predicts Lucy Letby Will Be a ‘Target’ Behind Bars

A former prison officer with decades of experience, who observed infamous inmates like Beverley Allitt and Rose West, has weighed in on the fate of convicted killer Lucy Letby. Letby, 34, was sentenced to 15 life terms earlier this year for the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of seven more, which took place between June 2015 and June 2016.

After a lengthy legal process that included 21 months of court proceedings, eight months of trial, and 76 hours of jury deliberation, Letby is serving a life sentence with no chance of release. However, a campaign advocating for her innocence has gained momentum. The group, claiming her convictions represent “the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history,” has become increasingly vocal, and even reportedly hostile. One person involved in Letby’s trial claimed to have been assaulted by a member of the “pro-Letby” camp, told the Mirror.

Families of Letby’s victims have expressed devastation over the renewed speculation about her guilt, especially as Letby may pursue an appeal with a new legal team. Her barrister has asserted there is “absolutely” a strong case for her innocence.

Retired prison governor Vanessa Frake has warned that Letby’s time in prison will be perilous. Speaking to The Mirror, Frake predicted that Letby would become a “target” for other inmates, particularly violent offenders. “You’ve got the likes of serial killer Joanna Dennehy behind bars who murders for fun. She’d have no hesitation in trying to have a go at Lucy Letby,” Frake explained.

Frake added that inmates who are mothers or carers will view Letby with particular disdain. “Women who have had children, who are carers and nurturers, will see the likes of Letby as lower than low,” she said. While Letby’s exact location within the prison may not be known to the general population, Frake emphasized that “they will know exactly what she looks like” from media coverage. It will be the prison staff’s responsibility to protect her from potential attacks.

As for any possibility of redemption or release, Frake is doubtful. “Letby has been found guilty and she is in prison to keep society safe. She will spend the rest of her days in jail, and that will give some closure to the families of her victims,” Frake said, adding that until Letby admits guilt and explains her actions, any chance of redemption remains unlikely.
