Meghan Markle Faces Unexpected Realities at Frogmore Cottage, Experts Share Insights

When Meghan Markle joined the royal family by marrying Prince Harry in May 2018, she entered a world filled with tradition and grandeur. Amidst her integration into royal life, Meghan reportedly experienced some misconceptions regarding her new home, Frogmore Cottage. Gifted by Queen Elizabeth as the couple’s primary UK residence, the property, though luxurious, fell short of Meghan’s expectations.

Meghan, who has often spoken about her limited knowledge of royal protocols and history, was reportedly “tricked” into believing that her new home was more of a castle than a cottage. Royal editor Charlotte Griffith shared insights with GB News, explaining the Duchess’s initial disappointment: “There were a few reports at the time that Meghan thought she was moving into Frogmore House, which is a much grander property. She felt a bit tricked or confused. She hadn’t quite realized it was actually a cottage with only eight bedrooms.”

The property, known as Frogmore Cottage, is indeed smaller compared to some of the grander royal residences. Despite its name, the cottage boasts eight bedrooms, yet Meghan’s expectations were seemingly set higher. The couple even invested about $3 million in renovations to make it their ideal home after their wedding.

However, the couple’s stay at Frogmore Cottage was not to last. After moving to the U.S., the property stood mostly vacant, with Harry and Meghan using it only during brief visits back to the UK. The situation escalated following the publication of Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” which included unflattering details about the royal family.

King Charles’s response to the memoir was to revoke their right to Frogmore Cottage. Griffith elaborated on this decision: “Harry was incensed by this move. Nothing is by chance with Harry. He’s kind of spiteful, and he can’t let go of the past. Why is he so hung up on Frogmore? This is the country he was desperate to get away from. This is a house he didn’t particularly want to live in.”

She added, “The reason his dad kicked him out of Frogmore was that he’d slagged off Camilla in ‘Spare.’ And it was a really difficult decision for Charles because no dad wants to kick their son out of their home. But he went beyond the pale,” Griffith concluded.

Amid these controversies, Prince Harry continues to challenge the boundaries with his father, King Charles. In a telling move, he backdated his primary U.S. residence change to the exact day they were asked to leave Frogmore Cottage, signaling a deep-seated rift within the family. Harry and Meghan now reside in Montecito, California, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, while maintaining a presence in public life through various initiatives and projects.
