Sudden Decline in Royal Popularity: Unveiling the Sussex Effect and Harry & Meghan’s Major Problem and Concern

The royal family is grappling with a major problem and concern concerning its public image, following the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from official roles, says expert Richard Fitzwilliams.

Data from market research firm Ipsos reveals a noticeable dip in the institution’s popularity between March 2018 and March 2023. This period also witnessed the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Fitzwilliams, speaking to the Daily Star, expressed concern over the link between the Sussexes’ departure in January 2020 and the declining approval of the monarchy.

He highlighted that the royal family’s support has slipped below 70% after the Sussexes’ resignation. The Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes the duo has significant appeal among the youth, particularly due to their presence on platforms like Netflix and their charitable endeavors.

Highlighting the challenge, Fitzwilliams said, “The issue is the diminished support among the 18-24 demographic.” Eric Schiffer, a reputation management expert, concurred and emphasized the importance for Prince William and Kate Middleton to address matters of significance to the youth. Schiffer noted the younger generation’s distaste for inauthenticity and suggested that some may perceive the monarchy as not genuine.

Looking ahead, Fitzwilliams remains optimistic about the monarchy’s future, lauding Prince William and Kate for their commendable public profile. He stated, “William and Catherine have a vast appeal.” He also praised King Charles for his impressive first year as the monarch, portraying him as a dedicated symbol of national unity.
